Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
