The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
