The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
