Radioactive Shrimp Issue: The Nation Faces Pollution in Key Industrial Area
An extensive manufacturing complex situated on the outskirts of Jakarta is addressing radioactive pollution following an official team found traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production plants inside the area, that includes businesses shipping frozen marine products.
Emergency Response and Product Withdrawal
The finding has led to emergency cleanup efforts and the relocation of local inhabitants, coming after a similar pollution scare in the United States that was traced back to the Jakarta plants.
A major international retailer is one of the companies that have recalled products from its stores after the finding.
Investigation and Detection of Pollution
The country's authorities initiated an investigation when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of frozen breaded shrimp sent by a local company.
The FDA issued an advisory instructing suppliers and retailers to discard the product and avoid selling it, although the found amount was far below the authority's action limit. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an acute risk to consumers.
The FDA stated: “The primary health effect of worry following longer term, ongoing low dose contact (for example through eating of polluted products or liquid over time) is an increased chance of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within body cells.”
Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations
Radioactivity tests revealed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing zone were contaminated. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the twenty-one additional manufacturing facilities, but said they would immediately undergo cleanup processes carried out by the country's atomic energy agency.
A senior official declared that people residing in strongly contaminated zones would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.
Medical officials additionally performed examinations on nearby workers and people living near the manufacturing estate, identifying nine people who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to go back.
Cleanup and Isolation Measures
The affected sites will immediately undergo decontamination operations by the national atomic energy institute. Officials have further designated the area of a recycled metal plant as an isolation center for contaminated goods.
Indonesia, which has no atomic energy facilities or arms program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from abroad.
Origin of Pollution and Import Restrictions
An official spokesperson told the media that recycled metal shipments were the likely cause of pollution and confirmed the authorities would immediately impose restrictions on scrap metal imports. He said that vehicles were also being checked for possible contamination as they traveled through the region.
About Caesium-137 and Health Risks
Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive isotope that typically appears in the ecosystem as a result of nuclear testing or incidents, like Fukushima or Chernobyl. Trace quantities are found in earth, food and the atmosphere.
The level found in the chilled shrimp was far lower than regulatory intervention levels, but the authority explained prolonged exposure to even low doses of the element was linked to an higher risk of the disease.
Withdrawal Information
The withdrawn seafood was sold at large store outlets across at least a dozen American states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
