Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.

The newly public emails showed that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for accused trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's choice to depart.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.
Legislative Background
This announcement follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on this week to pass a bill that would compel the US justice department to make public its files on Epstein.
The bill will subsequently move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has stated he plans to sign the legislation, after changing his view on the issue following pushback from his followers.

A batch of financier-linked messages made public by the Congressional committee days ago included numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.
The communications showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to prominent international personalities.

After the emails were released with the general audience, Summers said he took "complete accountability for my poor choice to maintain corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and repair bonds with the people nearest to me".
Professional History
The professor held high-level positions under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the university from five years and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his departure from public roles recently on Monday, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in DC where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was not associated with the organization.
The former official entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
