A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were arrested at the location and a third person who ran away subsequent to the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area displayed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the residence was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member caused the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
