At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
