Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff win against the same opponent.

Final Round Drama

The champion entered the final round with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final hole.

Play-Off Decider

This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
